613 Avenue Create- Challenge #129 - ATG/Optional Twist: Sights, Sounds, Taste of Summer

Hello, Crafty Peeps!
The challenge this week at 613 Avenue Create is ATG with the Optional Twist of "Create Your own Challenge using the Sights, Sounds, and Tastes of Summer."

My goal was to create an underwater scene on this mason jar!  As usual, I got carried away messing around with the paint!  But you still get the idea, don't you?
I am in love with Ranger's Abandoned Coral.  Great color and it worked here so well!

Is this an awesome looking crab or what?

Here is how I started:
The great thing about chalk is that it requires no primer coat.  I used ESF Chalk it up English Tea Cake, which gives you a really pretty soft blue base.  The napkins are by Michel Designs.  These cocktail napkins are 3 ply  and very high quality.
To decoupage the large images (coral and crab) I separted only one of the white bottom plys.  For words and smaller cut outs, I removed the two white bottom plys
Earth Safe English Tea Cake
After coating my jar with the chalk paint, I placed it in a cold oven and set the oven temperature to 170 degrees.  When the oven reached 170 degrees, I turned it off and let the jar remain in the oven for 30 minutes.  Make sure that you allow the jar to cool before applying more paint and/or beginning to decoupage.
To create the bottom of "my sea," I painted the bottom and about 1/4" of the bottom edge with ESF Chalk It Up Milk Chocolate.  I then painted over that with Ann Butler Iridescents Limelight.  You cannot see the shimmer in this picture, but it is very effective IRL.  I also brushed the Iridescents Limelight over the upper part of the jar to mimic "algae" green.
To achieve a deeper blue, I painted and blotted Ranger Mermaid Lagoon Spray Stain around the jar.  I  allowed it to dry and then brushed with the Iridescents Limelight until I was satisfied with the blended colors.  I applied a light coat of Ranger Abandoned Coral Spray Stain to my front focal to contrast the deep blue.  The Clam Bake banner is from the Pink Paislee Nantucket Collection!
The jar was then sealed with four coats of Mod Podge "SATIN" decoupage glue.  The great starfish charm was in my stash and  is attached with Helmar 450 Adhesive.
I recommend allowing the project to dry overnight.  Allow 15-20 minute drying time between each coat of paint and Mod Podge
