2020 Stash Party #7 - You Are Unforgettable - Birthday Card

Hello, Crafty Peeps!

Ann Butler and Jennifer McGuire are two of my favorites designers!  I was able to combine techniques from both of them to create this birthday card for a very special lady.

If you have been following me, you know that I have become addicted to the Split Card design 

created by Jennifer McGuire.

I have now fallen in love with the stenciled background technique that Ann Butler shared last week.

I used a combination of inks (Chalk, Dye, Washable, and Distress Oxide) to create this background.  The Chalk, Dye and Washable Inks were Inkadinkado inks that have been in my stash since 2010.  The stencil is a Heidi Swapp.  I have had it for about 8 years.

I used another 10-year-old ink product to stamp the sentiment and the cute little baby elephant!

Tomorrow, I plan to spend the day experimenting with my stencils and my orphaned inks to see what kind of fun backgrounds I can create!  You should try it!

Shopping Our Stash #414 - The Great Outdoors

Hello, Crafty Makers!

Today starts another fortnight challenge at Shopping Our Stash.

The challenge theme is "The Great Outdoors,"  

Share with us any project that has anything related to the "Outdoors" or "Nature."

I am doing a series of split cards and this challenge seemed a perfect opportunity to experiment more with the technique.

I AM ALLERGIC TO BEE STING!

Solitary Bees invade our yard each year. I really want to reclaim our lawn and get back to the beautiful street appeal we once had but, in order to do, that we would have to put down chemicals that would kill the Bees and that does not work for us. Also, the county extension office told us that it is illegal to kill Solitary Bees because they are often more efficient at pollination than Honey Bees.  And, if you add to that my compromised immune system, you can see our dilemma.  

The inside of the card is very simple!  I may stamp a birthday sentiment at the very top. I might be able to do that and still leave room for a personal note.

The most fun part of creating these split cards is figuring out how to arrange the focal grouping.  It should tell a story, I think. My honeycomb was originally totally on the outside of the card but it accidentally slipped behind my top panel and I thought, "oh, yeah, that will work!"   I used Stickles on the bee's wings and "Glossy Accents" on his body.  I also used "Wink of Stella" on the honeycomb and the sun!

As for our real bees, we could have the entire yard dug up after they leave.  Turning the yard would destroy their tunnels and we can hope that they won't return but that could be expensive and possibly futile since it is the flowers that attract them.  In the meantime, at least I honored the bees with a fun, crafty card!

Aged To Perfection Friends

 I have had this cute little Art Impressions stamp for several years and this is my first time using it.  I want to try a bunch of images on this split card design because it is great for using up paper scraps.  It is also giving me the opportunity to use some of my borders and edge dies that have not been used in a while.

I used my Tim Holtz® Lattice "Frameworks™" Die to create the banners that form the top of the card.  This is a flip-up style split card so after cutting my white layer, I used the die to cut two more layers from scrap paper and layered them on top.  I used the same papers to cut the bottom shapes for the card.  I also included a shimmer vellum layer to add a little glam.   I also added a little Wink of Stella™ to the entire image.

I kept the inside fairly simple.

2020 Stash Party #3 - Friends - Spilt Card Step Tutorial

Hello, Crafty Peeps!

I love this split card technique that I learned at Jennifer McGuire's blog.  As I always do, I created a step tutorial to use for future makes.  I love videos, but I don't like the idea of watching the entire video and then watching it again to create the project.

   Staying true to my goal of only using stash items.  Every element of this project is at least one year old.

My dies moved a little when I ran it through the BS.  I did not have enough purple tape on it.  I did not want to color another so I just went with this one.  It is not necessary to use vellum but it does add extra interest to this card type.

Step by Step

Tools Needed: 

Paper Trimmer, Bone Folder, Scoreboard, Piercing Tool, Die-cutting machine

Paper Supplies:

Paper: White Card (80lb or 110lb)  2 pieces cut to 4-3/4" x 4-1/4"

Paper: Vellum Shimmer or Plain.  2 pieces cut to 4.25" wide by 5.50" long

Paper: Colored Card. 1 piece cut to 4.25"x 5.50", and  1piece cut to 4"x 51/4"

Tape:   Strong adhesive tape runner and Double-sided tape

Stamping Supplies:

Rubber/Digital Image(s) (Size matters. The image will bridge your split.)

Sentiment Stamp(s)

Alcohol Markers or Colored pencils

Glitter pen (Optional)

Embellishments (Optional)

Die Cutting Supplies:

Die that matches your image or you can fussy cut your image

Border dies (Boderablities, Edgeabilities, etc.)

1. Stamp your images, color and die cut them then set them aside. 

2. Score the two 4-3/4" x 4-1/4" pieces at 1/2" on the 4-1/4" (left) side. Burnish.

3. Position and cut your border dies as desired at the bottom of your top panel and at the top of your bottom panel.

(My original card was going to feature an Ice Cream Cone.  The scallops are scoops.)

4. Insert the vellum panels inside your white panels.  Position your border dies on the vellum in the desired position and cut.

5.  Once you have determined the distance you vellum will "peek" from beneath your white card, secure the vellum temporarily with a piece of washi or purple tape.

I decided to add a few decorative touches to my panels.

6.  Take the smaller piece of colored card 4" x 5.25" and insert it into the flaps of your top and bottom halves.  Determine the distance you want between the halves.  You can test the distance with your image.

7.  Apply adhesive to the 1/2" flap to secure your flap to your colored card base.  Make sure to leave the washi tape on your vellum pieces to keep them in place. 

8.  Trim excess paper from the top, bottom, and sides

9.    Stamp your sentiment on the front of your card.

10. Apply adhesive ( glue runner is best) to the top and bottom flaps to secure your vellum.

11.  Apply adhesive to the back of your image and add your image to your card!

12. Apply double-sided tape to the back of your card face. (The glue will give you time to position your card face if you need to.)

13.  Center you completed card front onto the 4.25" x 5.50" piece of colored card.

Add creative touches as desired.

I added a little Wink of Stella to the shell of my snail as well as the dress, wings, socks, shoes, and the dress of the little girl.

2020 Stash Party #2 - Party Like It's Your Birthday - Split Card

Hello, Crafty Peeps!

This card is the second project created for my self-challenge "Only Use Stash!"  My goal is two-fold.  I want to navigate 2020 without purchasing craft supplies and to use dies, stamps, digital images, and equipment that has sat unused and neglected, some for years!  In this project, I was able to use old paper, old stamps, and dies.

Mimi in Paris

 I have two stamp sets that are absolute favorites of mine but I have not used them for years.  This darling stamp is from Mimi In Paris.  The other set is called Mimi and Miles and is equally charming.  As soon as I knew I was going to create this split card, this adorable Penny Black stamp was my first choice for an image. 

I purposely kept the interior of the card simple. I added a rhinestone to the little flower to match the rhinestone on Mimi's beret and the bow on her little dog.

The dog reminds me of my Minature Poodle, AWOL.  My husband gave AWOL to me as a gift shortly after we were married.  We were both in the military and both worked in highly classified areas.  His job required a lot of travel and he could never tell me when he was leaving, where he was going, or how long he would be gone.  Since we worked under these high-level security clearances, we could not even discuss our work with each other.  The Hubster thought a dog would keep me company.  I named him SGT. AWOL Harris because when we were driving back to the base, he crawled into the hubby's open shirt and into his sleeve.  There he sat with his little head poking out, thoroughly enjoying the wind on his face.  He was so tiny and so cute...I miss him until this day.
