Canvas Corp Brands Crew Challenge #9 - Designer Inspired

Hello, Crafty Peeps!

The Creative Crew at Canvas Corp has been challenged to translate a design from one of their favorite designers.  The translation can be a card, or DIY project, a Scrabook layout, etc.   We are not trying to duplicate their work, we are drawing from their color story, or their design aesthetic.

I chose McKenzie- Childs.  I really like their hand painted accessories.  I thought it would be fun to draw inspiration from their designs, but put an antique spin on it.

I played around with mixing colors to come up with the look I wanted.  I wanted a Gold and Patina look on my jars ( I am working on three more.)  McKenzie-Childs creates mostly brightly colored contemporary pieces, so I was really drawing from the "hand painted" aesthetic.  I added the chevrons on the side as a nod to their use of geometric designs in many of their pieces.

Started with this empty fruit jar.

1. Removed clear labels from front and back.

2.  Applied one coat of Gesso Primer to Jar and Cap

3.  Applied one coat of Earth Safe Finishes English Tea Cake Chalk Paint

4 Applied Cheveron die cut to sides of the jar.

5.  Spray and/or paint jar with Tattered Angels'

6.  Dry brush muddy areas with Gesso to lighten.

7. Apply Tattered Angels Saffron Glimmer Glaze to Jar Handles and around the neck of the jar.

8.  Paint recessed jar front and cap with DecoArt Splendid Gold Metallic Paint.

Allow to Dry, then add a top coat of Tattered Angels Saffron Glimmer Glaze.
Label as desired.
I will label my urns when all are completed.

613 Avenue Create Challenge #123 - Let's Celebrate

Happy Mother's Day!    

This is another of my "reuse those cardboard boxes" projects!  

Celebrating Generations of  Strong, Loving, Black Mothers!

 These vintage photos were downloaded from Pinterest.  One is from the 50's, the other is Victorian.

After sizing and printing, I lightly daubbed them with Ranger's Vintage Photo.

I also applied a little Vintage Photo Distress Ink to the background design paper, 

and edges of the sentiment and ephmera.

The sentiment is from Prima's Life and Time Collection.  The Ephemera is from Tim Holtz 

TUTORIAL

MATERIALS USED:

4 Flaps from a corrugated cardboard box 

Sizzix Alteratios' Postage Stamp Frame Die (This is a Movers and Shapers Die)

Spellbinders' Small Deckled Rectangles Die

Earth Safe Finishes (ESF) Gesso

ESF "Chalk It Up" Plum Preserves

Tattered Angels'  Plain Jane  "Bittersweet" and "Clay" Matte Mist

Viva Inka Gold "Old Silver"

Cut eight panels using the Postage Stamp Frame

Reserve one panel (this is your base.)  Using a retangular die,

cut out the center of the frame of the remaining 7 frame panels.

Use a strong wet glue to adhere the 7 frames.  Be sure to apply glue to top and sides.

Cover with Gesso. Do not apply glue to the inside, if you do, you may not be able to 

"float" your elements.

 Choose your color profile and any accent finishes. 

Apply main and accent colors to top and sides according to your profile.

Use brush strokes and color to create the look of aged wood.

I used Tatted Angels Plain Jane "Clay" and Bittersweet" to paint the edges of the frame.

I used Inka Gold "Old Silver" to highlight the brushstrokes on the front and to highlight the tops, sides and small rectangular frame.  To create the "floating" effect, insert photos /images into the spaces between the frames. 

Images stamped on "clear" cardstock are best to achieve the true "floating" effect.

 Decide on the placement of your embellishments.  I wanted one grouping to guide the eye.

The Outlawz Greetings Challenge - Show Us Your Polka Dots

Last week I made the painful decision to step down as Team Leader of the Outlawz Monday Greetings Challenge Design Team.  For the first time since 2010, I am creating as a regular member.  

The Outlawz was my first team and will always hold a special place in my memories.

So here is my Polka Dots Card.  I chose to do a mixed media panel for the front of my card!  I have so many new paints and spray with which to play, I just couldn't pass up the opportunity.

Painting on burlap paper was an experiment that worked out pretty well.  I also enjoyed the effects achieved by varying the sizes of polka dots and making irregular strokes across the wet paste. 

Viva Inka Gold Wax (Old Gold, Old Silver, Greenyellow) added highlights and kept the colors from becoming too muddy.  The most difficult part of this design was choosing the ephemera!

STEPS AND PRODUCTS USED TO CREATE THE PANEL: 

• Cut a piece of burlap paper to 4"x6"  - (DCWV Burlap Stack)
• Apply a thin coat of Gesso.  (Earth Safe Finishes) VOC Free Product
• Use Stencils and molding paste (I used three different sizes) to create Polka Dot
• Circle Stencils: Heidi Swapp, Hero Arts, Crafter's Workshop (Mini Life Shapes)
• Molding Paste: Liquitex, Homemade Texture paste mixed with Stormy Sky DI
• After past has dried (use heat tool to speed drying time) apply paints in the desired colors
• Tattered Angels: Plain Jane Simply Sheer Cozy Yellow; Plain Jane Baseboard Grass
• Tattered Angels: High Impact Paint Tan
• Shimmerz: Bamboo Leaf
• Tim Holtz: Distress Spray Stains: Mermaid Lagoon and Abandoned Coral; Paint: Picket Fence; Distress Ink: Vintage Photo
• Viva's Inka Gold: Old Gold, Old Silver, Greenyellow
• Choose and apply your Ephemera.  I used Tim Holtz's Thrift Shop, Emporium, Expedition.  The Hello speech bubble was cut from Simple Stories SNAP Color Fusion
• Polka Dot Designer Paper - Simple Stories Snap Color Vibe 1
• Border Punch: Martha Stewart's Embossed Zigzag
• Ribbon and twine from my stash

Canvas Corp Brands Crew Challenge: Save A Recipe - 7 Gypsies Farmhouse Collection

I am so happy to share my recipe book using the 7 Gypsies' Farmhouse Collection!  This is only my second project for Canvas Corp since I joined their design team. I hope you enjoy looking at this project as much as I enjoyed creating it!  But most of all, I hope you leave inspired!

CANVAS CORP BRANDS - SAVE A RECIPE - CREW CHALLENGE

My husband, a home cook/amateur chef, has pretty much banned me from the kitchen!  I do like to sneak in there sometimes to whip up some of my favorite recipes.  The recipies are saved on my Mac, but I really like books/paper.  One day, I told myself: " Self, if you make a recipe book, you can keep it in your studio and just hop down to the kitchen with it when you need to."  This project is the brain child of that inspirational conversation! Oh, yeah, and the CCB Crew Challenge!   

Chana's Farmhouse Recipe Book
My goal, was to create a "vintage" book that might have been found in an old country kitchen.  I chose the palette to communicate the look and feel of  an "aged and much used" family treasure.

FRONT

The Farmhouse Paper is so pretty,  I didn't want to muck about with it too much.

 I chose to do spot color only!  The Onion was colored using Viva's Inka Gold's "Greenyellow."  I used Tattered Angels' High Impact Metallic Platinum to color the colander and the rooster.  Gelatos were used to color the cherries.  Heavy distressing on the edges of the spine creates a well worn look.   The paper on the spine is Graphic 45.

BACK

Coloring the carrot was a bit of a challenge, but I was really pleased with the outcome.  I used Tattered Angels' High Impact Platinum Paint mixed with a little Viva Inka Gold Old Silver to achieve an antiqued salt/pepper shaker.

I used Ranger's Divided Tag Sleeve to hold the Page Marker, which is stored in the front of the book. 
I wanted burlap somewhere in this project, so I created a recipe card holder as a decorative insert. 

The recipe card folder has blank index cards.  There are additional "decorated" recipe cards in the pocket of the folder.  I used the Ranger Pocket Pages as section dividers. Cutouts from 7 Gypsies' Farmhouse Collection  and Carta Bella's Homemade with Love were used as pocket inserts. 

I created my own recipe cards and used stencils to embellish the front and back.  The backs of the Pocket Pages were covered with papers from the Carta Bella Homemade with Love Collection.  These papers introduced soft color without overtaking the main Farmhouse color profile and they added visual interest to the book by breaking up the black/white/kraft palette.

These pockets serve double duty as they will hold recipes that I tear out of magazines, etc. , until I can transfer them to a proper card.  Because the backs are covered, I can stick handwritten recipes and notes behind the decorative panels.  My book will stay neat and tidy and pretty!

One of the sections in the book is LUNCHES.  For my brown bag lunch recipes, I created a brown bag recipe card.  The bag is punched two ways to that it can be placed vertically when using the recipe that is on the back, or one of the recipe cards that are stored inside!

Inside the back cover is additional storage for blank recipe cards.  To create this holder, I simply colored a white Farmhouse Folder with TH Vintage Photo and Pumice Stone DI.  The back was glued to the cover and decorated with the cute little sliverware charm.

I could never have a recipe book that did not include a section for Coffee and Tea Recipes.
This section is still under construction, but I wanted to share anyway!

The Outlawz Greetings Challenge: Anything Goes

Hello, Crafty Peeps!

Although I did not know it at the time, this is my final project as a member of The Outlawz Design Team.    The Outlawz was my first ever DT and I thought I would be there regardless; but life is just full of little surprises.   As much as I like to think that all I need do to defeat my illness is be of a "strong will," the fact of the matter is I need to pick my battles....stress is something I can control, by not taking on more than I should and accepting the fact that I have limitations in my life now, that I did not have previously.

I have also come to the realization that there are other matters to which I want to devote my time and the only way to free up time is by cutting back on my crafting hours.   I will miss the ladies at Outlawz!  It was a fun experience, free of drama, and full of encouragement and inspiration!

MY BEST FRIEND - THE HAND FAN

I made this fan for ME!  I have had a hand fan by my side since the onset of menopause, and actually, for a few years before that! One of my favorite oriental fans disappeared (in church of all places).  I left my seat, came back and my fan was gone! SSMH over that one.  I left my FDR fan at my last place of employment.  Since I never wanted to see that place again, I didn't even attempt to retrieve my fan.  I was planning to go to The Little White House in Warm Springs to get another, but then lighting struck and TLWH burned to the ground, so the park was temporarily closed. Finally, I lost a fan I have had since 1995 (sigh) so I decided to make a fan for myself.   We humans do love to attach ourselves to the strangest things!

 Actually, this project gave me an opportunity to use the cool vintage stamps from the Canvas Corps (7 Gypsies) American Vintage Collection.  I also used some of the vintage road signs.  I think my favorite is the Route 66 sign.  Brings back memories of the old TV show!  I love my new fan and all the funky textures!

On the back, I used this opportunity to play with some of my Tattered Angels Sprays and Mists.  I even used two of the Plain Jane Baseboard Mists (Clay and Bittersweet) to stain the handle!

Canvas Corp Brands has a new line of 7 Gypsies Papers called American Vintage!  I received a few sheets in my box and one of the sheets was old vintage postage stamps.  My tag did not turn out exactly as I envisioned, but I still like it.  I have a few projects in mind that will make great use of these old stamps.  The tag background was created using Canvas Corp's Tattered Angels Sprays and Mists and distressed wtth Tim Holtz Distress Inks.   As is often the case with my tags, this project was inspired by a design by Tammy Tutterow.

My Grid Elements : TAG, ENCOURAGEMENT, METALLIC

The tag itself was cut from a Kellogg cereal box.

The Outlawz Greetings Challenge-Happy Spring/Use An Animal -= A Tutorial

 Our theme this week is "Happy Spring/Use An Animal."

I am working on a recipe book for another DT and one of the elements I am including are fancy recipe and menu cards.   Since I am not coloring these days, the "use an animal" twist tin this challenge threw me off a little but I did find a piece of ephemera that allowed me to at least comply with the spirit of the challenge1 :D)

RECIPE CARD STEP TUTORIAL

Supplies:

2 pcs - Neenah Cover Stock White or Cream  (4" x 6") 

1 pc  -  Core'dinations Cardstock - All in the Family "Out to Sea" (4 1/2" x 6 1/2")

Tattered Angels Products:

Tropical Pink Glimmer Mist

Seam Binding - colored with Distress Inks and Sprays (I used a scrap piece)

Brads, Flowers

Texture Paste, glue, mod podge( or other sealant) Gesso

Cut a piece of Neenah Natural White Linen Cover Stock to 4" x 6" and cover both sides with Gesso and let air dry (or use heat tool to speed up drying.) The brush strokes from the Gesso add additional texture to the design.

Mist the panel with your various sprays (all or any combination of the colors in supply list)until you achieve the desired effect.  Some of this will be covered with texture paste.  I blotted lightly each time I sprayed, but this is not necessary.  Let your eyes be the best judge.  Use heat to dry.  Note: Colors will be softer.

Position your stencil and apply texture paste to the desired area.  It is helpful to have some idea of where you plan to place you emphemera so that you don't totally cover the stenciled design.

Lift the stencil and allow paste to air dry or use heat tool.  Clean your stencil with water.

Reposition the stencil over the paste and align the imprint (sorry for the shadows, my paper bowed a little) sponge stenciled area with Distress Inks (Gathered Twigs, Peacock Feathers, etc.)

Sponge edges with Gathered Twigs (Vintage Photo will work just as well)

(1) To Make A Greeting Card: Cut a card base of a coordinating color 1/4 " to 1/2" larger than your card front.  Add your ephemera, ribbon, and stamped images or sentiments to your card front and attach it to your base cardstock.  For a more vintage look, use your distressing tool to tatter your edges. 

(2)To Make A Tag or Door Hanger:  Cut a piece of cardstock in a coordinating color 1/4 " to 1/2" larger than your panel front.  Add your ephemera, ribbon, and stamped images or sentiments to your card front and attach it to your accent backing.  Punch a hole in the center of your tag and use your crop-a-dile to insert an eyelet, thread ribbon through eyelet. 

This is the panel I used for my finished project.  The panel created during this tutorial will be used for another recipe card!

(3)To Make The Menu Card:  Adhere your ephemera, ribbon, and stamped images or sentiments to your card face and set it aside.  Cut a piece of cardstock in a coordinating color 1/4 " to 1/2" larger than your card front (my panel is 4 1/4" x 6 1/4".)  Type or print your recipe on the second 4" x 6" piece Neenah linen cover stock.  Attach menu to cardstock.  Turn over and attach card front.  Use corner chomper to round off corners,  I use 1/2".

Before placing the panel in my recipe book, I applied a piece of very thin cold laminating paper to the recipe to protect it.  I wanted to see if the WRMK Photo Fuse tool would seal it to the paper, but since I am still wating for the tool to be delivered, I will have to see if the lamination works!
