Outlawz Monday Greetings Challenge - Use Pink - Crafty Friend Gift Box

Hello, Crafty Peeps!

Sharing today my creation for this week's challenge at The Outlawz!  I am the September GDT for the Monday Greetings Team and our theme this week is Use Pink!  In addition to finding some wonderful inspiration, you also have the opportunity to win a great prize.

I have wanted, for a while now, to make this wonderful "Double Flip" gift box.  For this challenge, I created a "Crafty Friend" gift selection and it fit perfectly into this large box.

What a cool way to send a "crafty" to your favorite creative buddy!

The angled cuts on the side add graphic interest to the design.

(Yes, one flap is slightly crooked.  Should have used the cutter!)

 The flaps were coated with Mod Podge Sparkle.  

I also spinkled on a little Fairy Dust Glitter for additional sparkle!

 The fold over flaps on the inside of the box add sturdiness and stability.  To keep the design cohesive, I  glued a piece of card stock to the bottom of my box.

Canvas Corp Brands Crew Challenge #9 - Designer Inspired

Hello, Crafty Peeps!

The Creative Crew at Canvas Corp has been challenged to translate a design from one of their favorite designers.  The translation can be a card, or DIY project, a Scrabook layout, etc.   We are not trying to duplicate their work, we are drawing from their color story, or their design aesthetic.

I chose McKenzie- Childs.  I really like their hand painted accessories.  I thought it would be fun to draw inspiration from their designs, but put an antique spin on it.

I played around with mixing colors to come up with the look I wanted.  I wanted a Gold and Patina look on my jars ( I am working on three more.)  McKenzie-Childs creates mostly brightly colored contemporary pieces, so I was really drawing from the "hand painted" aesthetic.  I added the chevrons on the side as a nod to their use of geometric designs in many of their pieces.

Started with this empty fruit jar.

1. Removed clear labels from front and back.

2.  Applied one coat of Gesso Primer to Jar and Cap

3.  Applied one coat of Earth Safe Finishes English Tea Cake Chalk Paint

4 Applied Cheveron die cut to sides of the jar.

5.  Spray and/or paint jar with Tattered Angels'

6.  Dry brush muddy areas with Gesso to lighten.

7. Apply Tattered Angels Saffron Glimmer Glaze to Jar Handles and around the neck of the jar.

8.  Paint recessed jar front and cap with DecoArt Splendid Gold Metallic Paint.

Allow to Dry, then add a top coat of Tattered Angels Saffron Glimmer Glaze.
Label as desired.
I will label my urns when all are completed.

Canvas Corp Brands Crew Challenge: Save A Recipe - 7 Gypsies Farmhouse Collection

I am so happy to share my recipe book using the 7 Gypsies' Farmhouse Collection!  This is only my second project for Canvas Corp since I joined their design team. I hope you enjoy looking at this project as much as I enjoyed creating it!  But most of all, I hope you leave inspired!

CANVAS CORP BRANDS - SAVE A RECIPE - CREW CHALLENGE

My husband, a home cook/amateur chef, has pretty much banned me from the kitchen!  I do like to sneak in there sometimes to whip up some of my favorite recipes.  The recipies are saved on my Mac, but I really like books/paper.  One day, I told myself: " Self, if you make a recipe book, you can keep it in your studio and just hop down to the kitchen with it when you need to."  This project is the brain child of that inspirational conversation! Oh, yeah, and the CCB Crew Challenge!

My goal, was to create a "vintage" book that might have been found in an old country kitchen.  I chose the palette to communicate the look and feel of  an "aged and much used" family treasure.

FRONT

The Farmhouse Paper is so pretty,  I didn't want to muck about with it too much.

 I chose to do spot color only!  The Onion was colored using Viva's Inka Gold's "Greenyellow."  I used Tattered Angels' High Impact Metallic Platinum to color the colander and the rooster.  Gelatos were used to color the cherries.  Heavy distressing on the edges of the spine creates a well worn look.   The paper on the spine is Graphic 45.

BACK

Coloring the carrot was a bit of a challenge, but I was really pleased with the outcome.  I used Tattered Angels' High Impact Platinum Paint mixed with a little Viva Inka Gold Old Silver to achieve an antiqued salt/pepper shaker.

I used Ranger's Divided Tag Sleeve to hold the Page Marker, which is stored in the front of the book. 
I wanted burlap somewhere in this project, so I created a recipe card holder as a decorative insert. 

The recipe card folder has blank index cards.  There are additional "decorated" recipe cards in the pocket of the folder.  I used the Ranger Pocket Pages as section dividers. Cutouts from 7 Gypsies' Farmhouse Collection  and Carta Bella's Homemade with Love were used as pocket inserts. 

I created my own recipe cards and used stencils to embellish the front and back.  The backs of the Pocket Pages were covered with papers from the Carta Bella Homemade with Love Collection.  These papers introduced soft color without overtaking the main Farmhouse color profile and they added visual interest to the book by breaking up the black/white/kraft palette.

These pockets serve double duty as they will hold recipes that I tear out of magazines, etc. , until I can transfer them to a proper card.  Because the backs are covered, I can stick handwritten recipes and notes behind the decorative panels.  My book will stay neat and tidy and pretty!

One of the sections in the book is LUNCHES.  For my brown bag lunch recipes, I created a brown bag recipe card.  The bag is punched two ways to that it can be placed vertically when using the recipe that is on the back, or one of the recipe cards that are stored inside!

Inside the back cover is additional storage for blank recipe cards.  To create this holder, I simply colored a white Farmhouse Folder with TH Vintage Photo and Pumice Stone DI.  The back was glued to the cover and decorated with the cute little sliverware charm.

I could never have a recipe book that did not include a section for Coffee and Tea Recipes.
This section is still under construction, but I wanted to share anyway!

The Outlawz Greetings Challenge: Anything Goes

Hello, Crafty Peeps!

Although I did not know it at the time, this is my final project as a member of The Outlawz Design Team.    The Outlawz was my first ever DT and I thought I would be there regardless; but life is just full of little surprises.   As much as I like to think that all I need do to defeat my illness is be of a "strong will," the fact of the matter is I need to pick my battles....stress is something I can control, by not taking on more than I should and accepting the fact that I have limitations in my life now, that I did not have previously.

I have also come to the realization that there are other matters to which I want to devote my time and the only way to free up time is by cutting back on my crafting hours.   I will miss the ladies at Outlawz!  It was a fun experience, free of drama, and full of encouragement and inspiration!

MY BEST FRIEND - THE HAND FAN

I made this fan for ME!  I have had a hand fan by my side since the onset of menopause, and actually, for a few years before that! One of my favorite oriental fans disappeared (in church of all places).  I left my seat, came back and my fan was gone! SSMH over that one.  I left my FDR fan at my last place of employment.  Since I never wanted to see that place again, I didn't even attempt to retrieve my fan.  I was planning to go to The Little White House in Warm Springs to get another, but then lighting struck and TLWH burned to the ground, so the park was temporarily closed. Finally, I lost a fan I have had since 1995 (sigh) so I decided to make a fan for myself.   We humans do love to attach ourselves to the strangest things!

 Actually, this project gave me an opportunity to use the cool vintage stamps from the Canvas Corps (7 Gypsies) American Vintage Collection.  I also used some of the vintage road signs.  I think my favorite is the Route 66 sign.  Brings back memories of the old TV show!  I love my new fan and all the funky textures!

On the back, I used this opportunity to play with some of my Tattered Angels Sprays and Mists.  I even used two of the Plain Jane Baseboard Mists (Clay and Bittersweet) to stain the handle!

CANVAS CORP BRANDS 2015 DESIGN TEAM REVEAL

Hello Crafty Peeples!

It is so nice to begin my term as a Canvas Corp Brands Crew Member!  

For those of you who do not know, CCB is the parent company of  

Tattered Angels, 7 Gypsies, and Canvas Home Basics.  

  

It is awesome to be surrounded by so many talented ladies!  

For the DT reveal, we were asked to design a 4" x 4" canvas project that captures us as designers.  Those of you who visit here regularly know that I can be all over the place as a designer, so I really had to FOCUS on this project.

I had to incorporate earth tones into this canvas design.  They are so me!   I used a combinations of products:  Tattered Angels' Plain Jane Baseboard Matte Mists (Semi-Opaque) and  Plain Jane Simply Sheer Matte Mist (Water Color. )

I also used Inka Gold, Luminarte Silks Acrylic Glazes,  and Luminarte Primary Elements  (to hightlight the stenciled hand) and Tim Holtz Vintage Photo  Ink to sponge  the edges of the canvas and the dragon.

My current love for Mixed Media , Collage, texture paste and stencils is realized in the addition of this marvelous dragon and sentiment from 7 Gypsies'  Epicurean " 6"x6" Paper Pack.  I fussy cut the dragon, colored it, applied 4 coats of Mod Podge, and once dried, a coat of Crackle Accents!  

I applied masking tape to the sides of my canvas to achieve the look of  "distressed plaster."   Misc. embellishements provided depth and texture to the project.  All in all, I believed that I more or less captured my design aesthetic.  My style is evolving, so it will be interesting to see how I present myself on canvas at the end of my term wtih CCB.

I was totally awed by the fabulous canvas creations of my fellow Crew Mates.  

Each one seemed to be more beautiful that one that preceded it.

SURPRISE VALENTINE CARD AND ENVELOPE - CANVAS CORP BRANDS

Hello, Crafty Peeps

Today I want to share a project I created using Canvas Corp Brands:
 7 Gypsies and Tattered Angels.   

The Creative Crew was  challenged to create  a "Surprise" Valentine's Day Card and Envelope to deliver or mail to a person  who would least expect it.
Somebody is going to win $50.00 to spend in the retail shop!

My husband and I do not celebrate Valentine's Day, so I will be able to hand deliver my "surprise" card to him.  He will definitely be surprised or, at the least, bewildered.

My goal was to create a fun and easy project.  

Supplies:

1 Full Sheet cardstock

1 Medium scrap piece of cardstock

Embossing Folder - Sizzix Textured Impressions - Love Set #2

7 Gypsies "Lillie" 6" x 6" Variety Pack

Tattered Angels Plain Jane Baseboard - Bittersweet - Semi Opaque Matte Mist

Ribbon:  Really Reasonable Ribbon

Inks:  Tim Holtz "Vintage Photo" Distress Ink

Miscellaneous embellishments as desired.

1.  Cut cardstock to desired size.  My finished card is 6" x 4-1/2".

2.  Emboss with Love Set #2 using the Me + You and Single Heart folders.

3.  Emboss the scrap cardstock using the same two folders.

4.  Fussy cut the heart and the words from the embossed scraps.

5.  Using Tattered Angels's Bittersweet Mist, spritz the front of the card.  Blot, if desired.

6.  Once your card has dried, adhere the fussy cut embossed  elements to the embossing on   the front of the card.

7.  Complete the design by adding Ribbon and other embellishments.  Use TH Vintage Photo to sponge edges of both the card and the envelope.

8.  Decorate the envelope and interior as desired using papers from the Lillie Pack

CHALLENGE #107 - ANYTHING GOES with Optional Twist: WINNIE THE POOH DAY

It's Winnie The Pooh Day

If you want to play our optional twist, we challenge you to:

Use one of the following quotes in your creation

WINNIE THE POOH CLIPBOARD

For this challenge, I chose to create a clipboard using recycled paper products.  

I save various sizes of corrugated cardboard boxes. I have  found that I can cover them with fabrics such as canvas, burlap, crinolin, and create strudy functional items.   This is a functional clipboard and I have every intention of  using in in my studio.

Supply List:

Chipboard (2 Pieces) cut to the desired size (mine is 5" x 7") 

Paper Scraps (or other desired background papers)

Image

Clip

Baby Wipes

Gesso, Mod Podge (or other matte gel medium)

Inks, Paints, etc.

Step One:

Apply Gesso to the front of one of your cardboard panels.  Allow to dry.

Step Two

Arrange your background papers on your panel.  Don't worry about overlap 

Continue gluing pieces until you have your desired collage.  Leave some white spaces

When you are satisfied, apply several coats of Mod Podge.  Allow to dry between coats.

 Fold and trim overlap.   Remember that some the overlap will show on the back.

Step Three

Choose the color(s) that will be your primary color (chose yellow/brown to coordinate with Pooh's fur) and apply to your panel.  Use a baby wipe to mute your color

Round the corners of your clipboard at this point

Step Four

While your panel is drying, apply Gesso to your clip.  I decided to paint th red clip, but I could have used either clip without altering and they would have worked just as well.

 I also taped my Winnie The Pooh Invitation Stamps so I could use just the image.

Step Five

Choose paints, Inks, and/or sprays.  Experiment until you achieve the desired color profile

I wanted to pull in the color of the forest so I did greens, reds, etc.

Step Six

Apply stamped or hand drawn images.  Allow to dry, apply several coats of Mod Podge

Use your baby wipe to keep your colors from becoming muddy.

Step Seven

Determine the placement of  your image and sentiment. Center Clip

 Apply designer papers or other embellishment to clip

Step 8

Attach Clip, add image and sentiment.  

Apply several coats of Mod Podge until desired result is achieved

Apply back panel

I used Plain Jane Baseboard Brown by Tattered Angels
