2020 Stash Party #35 - Joy Looks Good On You - Crayons, stencils, and Gesso Resist

Hello, Crafty Peeps!

It is so good to feel well enough to craft again, even though it only an hour or so each day.  I am still working with background creation and the use of bold sentiment stamps.  On this project, I am using another Tammy Tutterow sentiment.

I always forget that stamping on resist projects can be challenging.  I probably could have stamped the sentiment several more times to get a bolder impression but I was hoping the clear embossing would intensify the color to my satisfaction.  Alas, it is okay but not ideal.  This was a fun technique to learn. 

I started by making random scribbles on my panel with the Art Crayons.  I used a sponge to blend the colors.  Next, I used a stencil and gesso.  I need to thin out my gesso.  I did not get the full impression of my stencil but a nice section shows through in the lower right-hand corner.  I applied gesso in a random fashion.  After this has dried, I came in with darker crayon color and scribbled it randomly just as I did with the first layer.  I used a baby wipe to spread the color so that I can see the stencil design (gesso resist.)  I used a piece of tissue paper to wipe the area of the panel where I used the baby wipe.  I added a little more of the dark color in one or two random spots and use the baby wipe again to blend it out.

Once I was satisfied with my background, I used my Bira Stamping Platform to add the sentiment.  I rummaged through my stash and found a small piece of green ribbon and some green and aqua flowers.  I added these to the panel along with a few sequins.  I stamped a simple image on the inside of the card and added a thin washi strip across the top.

I hope this week will be one in which I can do more crafting and less resting!  I have yet to use any of the items in the "Dollar Tree" haul that "The Hubster" presented to me.

2020 Stash Party #34 - Another Baby Wipe Background

I found another baby wipe technique on YouTube! 

My "Stash Party" is a way of exploring all the "stuff" I have accumulated over the years and using it for the first time or in new and different ways. Like most other crafters, when Tim Holtz introduced his Distress Inks, I purchased them all (quite a financial investment.) I also purchased the re-inkers. Because I am a creature of habit, I found myself using pretty much the same ink colors all the time and I have untouched pads and re-inkers that are still wrapped in the original plastic. The last few stash projects have also been an opportunity to use my Momento Inks. I sort of abandoned them when I started using Distress Inks. Now, I have rediscovered them and the colors are so vibrant!  Stash diving is fun and it saves money!

This is a fun and very simple technique.  You simply choose the colors you want to use, add a small dot of each color to a folded baby wipe. The spacing of your dots is up to you and mostly depends on the plaid design you want to create.  Swipe the wipe down your card panel(Vertical) and then turn it (Horizontal) and swipe again. I recommend cutting your panel slightly larger than the size you intend to use on your finished card.  Inks I used: Spiced Marmalade, Faded Jeans, and Mustard Seed.

When I talk about stash reduction, I have to include all the papers I own.  Back in 2008, Big Lots was selling the 25 sheet packages of Bazzill's Core-dyed Textured and Smooth cardstock for $5.00.  I think I must have purchased about 10 packs per week until it was all gone.  The Hubster thought I was crazy but now he has to admit that I made a good investment against inflation.  The papers came in assorted colors and there were different assortments.  I still have twenty or more unopened packages and many packages from which various colors have been used.  The paper I used for this project came from one of the assortment packs.

The Happy Gram Sentiment Stamp is a new purchase.  I love Tammy Tutterow's Big Sentiments and when I saw them in the Amazon Marketplace at a reduced price, I had to grab two of them. I actually set aside a portion of my stimulus check for use to purchase a few new dies and stamps. It was the first time I had purchased crafting supplies in almost two years. I can make one more purchase and then I am back on my "crafty diet" and won't make any more purchases this year or in 2021. I fussy cut the sentiment and colored it with oil pencils.  The uncut area of white card stock was too jarring so I used Faded Jeans Distress Oxide and Wink of Stella to calm it down and add a little interest.  I also reduced my brad stash by adding one that coordinates well with my colors to the sentiment.  

Speaking of brads, I have over fifty sets of Bo Bunny Brads (white foam ones) and maybe 30-40 of the carded brad sets.  This was another 2008 Big Lots find.  They were selling these for $1.00 and $1.25.  I recently went through my collections and separated the orphans and grouped them by size.  I also have about forty Prima brad packs and some miscellaneous ones that I purchased from a crafty supplier who was going out of business that same year.

Hello, Crafty Makers!

My goal this year is to learn a lot of new techniques and to use old supplies, tools, and materials I have been hoarding since the 1980's that I've never used.

This is the first of two cards I created for the "Leaf" challenge over at the Sisterhood of The Snarky Stampers.  I was looking for inspiration to use my Perfect Pearl mica powders that I haven't touched for years and surprise, surprise, Jennifer McGuire posted a new video this week on that very subject.

This card was actually created using the residual VersaMark ink on the image after the main stamping has been done.  My VersaMark pad needs replacing and I think a fresh pad would have left behind more ink and given a better image.   I also used textured paper and that may have had an impact.  All in all, I am pleased with the results.

Here is a better shot of the gold mica stamping as well as the background stamp.  I colored some elements of the background stamp using my Arteza Brush Markers.  I am not an artist so I don't try to do fancy shading, etc.  I just add little bits of color and keep it moving.

DaCre8tive One

I have recently become a fan of an artist known as DaCre8tive One.  I became aware of this artist while searching for African American Images on Pinterest.   I would like to say the image I used today is my favorite but I love all of the images and the truth is, they are all my favorites!

The DaCre8tive One has a unique way of using a neutral to bring energy and life to the faceless images, consequently, one is able to infer and express multiple meanings.

I took the most pedestrian interpretive approach for this design but the sentiment seemed very relevant to today's environment.  #knowyourvalue and #metoo

Shoipping Our Stash #263 - Silhouettes

Hello, Crafty Peeps,

This is a quick card I put together for the challenge this week at Shopping Our Stash.  Our theme is "Silhouettes."   My hands are giving me a few little problems, so I couldn't craft anything too involved!

For some odd reason, the word Silhouette conjured up images of little black, white, and grey squares.  So, I grabbed some white card stock and used my TCW mini cubist stencil to create a pattern.  This was much more fun than searching through stacks and stacks of paper and 6x6 pads!

Challenge:  Create A Shaped Project

Shaped cards used to be a real pain, however, with the innovative advances in thin metal die design and production, creating shaped cards is breezy easy.  As much as I love my Big Shots and other cutting machines, sometimes I like to do things the old fashion way.  I like to just use my hands.  I guess that is why I am so fascinated with Mixed Media these days.

Napkin Fold Card

I am not sure that my project really qualifies as a "Shaped Card, "  it may be more of a fancy fold.  It is, however folded into a shape, so I imagine I can skate on through!

The Hubster had a good time taking pictures.  He wanted to see how many ways he could fold the card.  He was very creative and came up with some fun shots.  Sharing for the fun of it!

Shopping Our Stash Challenge #209 - Country Gingham

This week, at Shopping Our Stash, we want you to

 show us your GINGHAM STYLE!

Here is my "Country" Gingham Style

Last year, I took advantage of Crafty Steals "Bundle Sales."  One of my favorite 6"x6" pads was WRMK's Country Livin', I think the designs are super cute.  I have been hoarding this pad, but this challenge was the perfect vehicle for these fabulous papers. The sentiment image is from one of the cut-apart pages which have a lot of ephemera.  (If you like these designs, Crafty Steals has the pads for $2.99.) 

  I give most of my cards to my SIL for her church,  so I usually leave the inside blank.

Although, I think, I may keep this one for my stash.  Selfish me!

Shopping Our Stash - Challenge #202 - Silver and Gold

Hello, Crafty Peeples!

It's Tuesday! This means another opportunity to diminish your STASH! 

This week the Shopping Our Stash Challenge is:

Create a project using SILVER AND GOLD

I chose to create my own background for this project and I was mighty surprised how well it worked.

My feathers are rather far apart, but..it works!

I am more inclined to create canvas projects than cards, these days, but I wanted to use my feather die, that has languished unused in my die box for almost a year.   The beautiful Hello die was a prize  from Quietfire.  I want Suzanne to know I love it!

HOW IT WAS DONE

 Background:

1. Apply Tattered Angels' High Impact Platinum Paint to a 4" x 5-1/4" piece of  Neenah Classic Crest Linen Card Stock.  
2. After the paint dries, use The Crafter's Workshop's Mini Cubist Stencil and Ranger Vintage Photo Distress Ink to create the first layer of background design.  Use heat tool to dry Ink.
3. Swipe Viva Inka Gold, Oldsilver across the background design.
4. Apply Viva Inka Gold, Oldgold to the cubist blocks (I applied randomly)
5. Allow the Inka Gold to set and then use the stencil with texture paste to add texture.
6. Apply Vintage Photo Distress Ink to the edges of your panel and use distressing tool.

Feathers

1. Die cut feathers using Spellbinder's "Feathers on the Wind" 
2. Apply a thin coat of Gesso.
3. Use your finger to swipe Viva Inka Gold over the feathers.
4. Apply a coat of Tattered Angesls' Saffron Glimmer Glaze.
5. Use your finger to apply a little luminarte Sunflower Pigment (Optional)
6. Apply Vintage Photo Distress Ink to the edges of both feathers.

Hello

1. Die cut sentiment using Quiet Fire's "Hello Die"  Hello#9500-2 (I used a scrap piece of a Kellog's Frosted Flakes cereal box.  The inside is a pretty grey which looks silver).  Apply a coat of Mod Podge allow to dry. (Heat tool will speed up drying)
2. Apply Viva Inka Gold "Oldsilver."  Be careful not to tear letters.  It is okay if the application is spotty.  I added a little "Oldgold" and Vintage Photo DI to my "hello" because I did not want a shiny sentiment.  Experiment until you come up with what works for you.
3. Spray with Sheer Shimmer (Silver)

National Random Act Of Kindness Day - 613 Avenue Create

Hello, Crafty Peeples,

Over at 613 Avenue Create we are celebrating National Random Act of Kindness Day (RAK).  As usual, our challenge is Anything Goes w/ Optional Twist and our Twist this week is create something for  your mailman, a neighbor, favorite waitress, etc.

This card is going into a bundle that my SIL is taking to her church.  They use them for birthdays, get well, etc.  My SIL always holds some back for the members to take for their personal use.

Oh, Shiny! - Shopping Our Stash

Hello Crafty Peeples!

Well this week at Shopping Our Stash, we are giving you the opportunity to get rid of some more of that shiny, glittered and glitz paper that you purchased for your Christmas Cards.  So we want you to create a project with elements that Shine, Shimmer and/or Sparkle!

I am not a Shine, Shimmer, or Sparkle kind of designer, so this was a real challenge for me.  I decided to keep the glitz to a minimum and my little heart strip stamp from Unity Stamp Company was the perfect image for CAS design.  I stamped it with Versamark and then heat embossed with Stamp n' Stuff Transparent Red Glitter Embossing Powder.

 The Victorian Grunge (digi) paper is by Vectoria Designs.  This was another item that was on an easel on my cutting table.  I printed it to use with a project using a Rick St. Dennis Image, but that design took a left turn in my brain and this beautiful paper no longer worked.  It does work wonderfully here as an element of this focal grouping.
The Swiss Dotted DP is from the Authentique "Seasons Autumn" Collection.
The plain brown CS is Bazzill and the red base CS is Neenah "Red Pepper" #80 CS.  The Ribbon is from Really Reasonable Ribbon

 I felt compelled to add one more glittered element, so, the two glittered hearts on the inside front cover.
