Hello, Crafty Makers!

This is just a quick post of a simple "Fall" tag.  I have a "tag background library" and this was originally created to be added to the library.  I create a background on tags and use "unconventional" objects to create my designs.  I was going to use scissors on this one but the colors were so autumnal, I changed my mind!

The sentiment was stenciled using Memento "Bamboo Leaves"

I resisted the urge to stamp an additional sentiment on the back.  I just love this paper and as I used it here, it stands well on its own.

2020 Stash Party #41 - Totally Tag Time - Blends and Splatters

Hello, Crafty Makers!

One of the worse symptoms of my disease is FATIGUE!

I have been so tired these past few weeks that I have barely been able to muster the strength to get out of bed.  My doctors keep reminding me that my disease is in remission not cured.  There is no cure for what ails me.  It really sucks when I can't do the one thing that brings me to my happy place.  Anyway, enough of my pity party!  

This afternoon, I felt well enough to make a try at crafting.  It has been quite a while since I created a tag and it occurred to me that I needed to make another YT video for my Beginners Series and that a tag would be "easy" and fun.

"I Wish"

I just love how this background turned out even though my Shaded Lilac Distress Oxide pad is a soupy wet mess.  I don't think this particular pad  (and one other that I own) got the right mix of distress and pigment inks.  This one seems to be more pigment ink than Oxide.  In the end, I was able to blend the inks to my satisfaction but it was not easy!  I do not own Spun Sugar and Tumbled Glass Oxide Ink so I used the regular Distress Ink and it worked just fine.  

I had some unexpected fun while playing around with my splatters.  I had intended to use just water splatter and white splatter but when I put my brush into the water it turned the water a very soft and pretty green.  I decided to splatter it onto my tag anyway.  It works. I also added a white splatter and a light splattering of plain water.

I must have 200 or more 6"x6" designer paper pads.  I don't use paper that much these days and I determined that using these paper pads needs to become a part of my 2020 and 2021 Stash Challenge.  I created this tag using a scrap from my stash and needed to cover the back.  I just picked a random pad and this particular design included the colors I needed and coordinated well with my lavender ribbon.

I failed to leave a spotlight (a space that does not have color) for my sentiment but it turned out okay!  I actually like the way the blended colors weave through the words!

The project needed a bit of texture so I added a bit of sparkle and a few sequins.

I will have to create another tag for the YT video and I think I will use different colors.  But making this little tag definitely lifted my spirits.

Well, you know you are getting old when you think you've posted a project!   I am here with a quick post of my DT make for The Outlawz Greetings Challenge.    We want you to create a project using 2 or more inchies.   Inchies were all the rage a few years back and it is nice to revisit "old" friends.   I actually plan to try to incorporate inches into some of my future mixed media projects.  It would probably add great depth.

I just added a little drywall tape and stencils for depth and texture.  The drywall tape has gold accents, but that did not translate so well when I took the pictures.. alas!

THE BASKET 

   My first attempt at creating my own designer sheet for a project. 
 I am so pleased with the outcome!  I had a ball designing this paper.
NOTE PAD HOLDER w/MINI CLIPBOARD

Thanks to hubby, who built a pad press for me a few years back, I was able to customize and pad my own paper.  The note tray holds two gummed pads.  The mini clipboard is functional and works great for little notes!  It also serves as a cover for the note tray.

The front of the tags read: smile, love, hope, etc., the backs of the tags are gold!

Some are embossed and others are stamped.

I have created a box to hold this first group of items. Next, I will tackle the lap desk or the actual stationery sheets, which  are the most laborious, because the stenciling and embossing all have to be done the "old fashion" way....metal stencils, light boxes...you know.

Hello, Crafty Peeples!

The tag I am posting today was not created for any particular challenge.  A few months ago, I stepped down from five design teams so I could free up time to spend with my husband and also so I could spend more time learning new card making and other paper crafting techniques.

I used to describe myself as a "slow designer" but now I consider myself a "deliberate" designer.  I have in the past, and on my three current design teams, worked with ladies who were/are capable of creating mini masterpieces in five minutes.  I don't even wish I could do that.  For me, the true fun of my hobby is the creative process itself.  I don't want to finish a card in five minutes, I want to linger over it, have an opportunity to run across that "perfect" embellishment that will make this little creation spring to life.  Now, with only 3 DT projects to produce on alternating weeks, I have time to explore YouTube, take classes, and take my time.  None of this makes me a better designer.  But it does allow me to return to the pure enjoyment of relaxing and making cards.

 Today, I am posting a tag that was the result of my efforts to learn a new technique.  The goal was to make my tag background look like "linen".  This post will chronicle my "failed attempt". 
 I really like the tag I eventually created.

I didn't realize that my Ranger Picket Fence Distress Paint was almost empty and because of that, my paint layers were too thin to make the lines appear as distinct as they should. But I think you can see the linen pattern in the area around the large butterfly.  The linen effect is achieved by putting down a layer of Picket Fence Distress Paint and while it is still wet drawing vertical lines the lenght of the tag with your craft scratcher.  Dry the layer with your heat tool and then repeat the process only this time the lines are drawn horizontally.  I did four layers (two each vertical and horizontal).

Unfortunately, I do not own a lot of background stamps, so the image I stamped was a large Flourish.  You can see a bit of it above the butterfly wings.  The image is stamped with embossing ink and then heat embossed with clear embossing powder.  Next you apply the Distress Paint (you cannot use Distress Stains for this) and dry with your heat tool.  Once it is dry, you place the tag inside a folded piece of newsprint or kraft wrapping paper and iron it.  This will remove the embossing powder.

The trick to ironing off the embossing powder is to remove the paper while the embossing powder is still hot.  If you are not quick enough, the paper will stick to your design.  If that happens, you can simply iron it again.  I rather liked the look of the few patches of paper that stuck to my tag, so I left them and dabbed this with a little Ranger "Vintage Photo" Distress Ink.  I really liked the one large patch at the bottom of the tag.  There is a smaller patch above the large butterfly's right wing that I stained with a bit of Ranger "Antique Linen" Distress Ink.

Here is the link to Tammy Tutterow's Tutorial.  As you will see, if you use a stamp with a bold design, your linen look tag will be more dramatic.  Tammy creates the most amazing tags.  She also teaches fabulous techniques so if you have not signed up for her e-mails, you should.

Father's Day is closing in on us and over at CCCB we would like for you to create a card, tag, ATC, scrap page or altered object for that special man in your life.  I have been working on a rub-ons resist technique that I learned over at Tim Holtz' blog, so I decided to do this tag to to tie on my husband's father's day gift.  My grandson called it "pretty, but girly".  I think my husband will understand.

I really love the look of this technique using rub-ons.  Notice how my stamped image seems to float beneath the sentiments, even though the rub-on were applied to the tag first, before the distress inks and stamped images.  Cool, huh? 

 I have fallen all the way in love with Ranger's Distress Inks and Paints.  Joann's has them on sale today for $2.99 which is a $2.00 savings and I  purchased all the colors that were available on line.   The colors I ordered will hold me over until the next sale and then I will get the rest.  

Another item you will want to have, particularly if you plan to do Vintage or  really Funky Steam Punk cards and tags, is Rub and Buff Wax Metallic Finishes.  You can find the sampler kits on Amazon and Overstock.com.  They tend to have better prices than art supply stores.

I guess I am just in a tag making mode!  I have another one coming Wednesday for my Crafter's Cafe Challenge DT project.  Anymahoo,  here is another one of my "having fun playing with my Tim Holtz and Graphic 45 Stuff projects.  This one was for the Saturday, Paper Ala Mode Challenge at The Outlawz!

I could have kicked myself when I realized I had not ordered the 3rd stamp set that goes with the Graphic 45 Birdsong Collection (I corrected that error today when I stumbled across the set in the clearance section at Scrapadabadoo.  I really wanted to leave the flower off the design, but to cut the dress out of the dp sheet, the edge of the train ends up being square.  When I tried to round it off, it looked funky, so I decided the flower(actually made for another project) was less funky and the colors just happen to agree.

Adding the Design Paper to the back of the tag is a good way to cover the brad legs, as well as the bleeds from the inks, paints and stains.

Hello, Crafty Peeples!  

My fingers are blue/green because I have been playing with my Ranger Paints, Stains, and Inks.  I love mixing the three together and creating fun backgrounds for my projects.  This week's challenges

provided a wonderful opportunity to get "inky".  

To create this background, I used a #8 Manila Tag. I swiped the tag with the following stains:

Spiced Marmalade, Pickett Fence (Paint), Faded Jeans, Black Soot, Tea Dye (just a spot), and Squeezed Lemonade.  I usually experiment with with adding color, spritzing and blotting until I get the undercoat I want;  then I apply my final swipes. The tag tends to get saturated, so I use my heat tool in between putting down layers (of stains) and spritzing.  A terry towel works great for blotting excess water. I use a solid design paper or kraft paper for the back of the tag to cover any paint seepage.

Once the tag was throughly dried, I spritzed it with a mist made using Ranger's "Perfect Pearls - Gold".  The edges are inked with Ranger "Black Soot".  The glimmer mist is difficult to see the in the photo, but it is very pretty IRL.  Remember, if you want your colors to be "vibrant/hard", allow your tag to air dry.  If you want the colors to "soften", use your heat tool.  Adding a sealant will also soften the colors but, be careful because, the Ranger inks and stains are reactive with water and you may get some fading and spillover of colors.  This usually adds interest to the project rather than distracting from it.

Spring Fling

Hey, Crafty Peeps,

This week at Crafter's Cafe Challenge Blog, we are introducing a new sponsor, Fred She Said Stamps. Our theme is an ATC or a Fat Page.  I don't scrap, but my understanding is that a Fat Page has to be 4x4 and you pile a lot of stuff on it.   Well I made a Fat Card.  It is 4 x 4 and I put on a lot of embellishments and added tags outside and inside.

I promised my self, no more green, but like most promises, pledges and resolutions, that only lasted until I forgot! :D)   I am, however, remaining faithful to my pledge to use my stash and to try and all the paper in one stack.  I am working on the Couture 6x6 pad by S.E.I.  I used it in this project and for my project on Monday for the Outlawz Greetings Challenge.








I wanted to add a lot of tags to this card, and there are actually four tags in all (Only two are pictured here)  I created two 3" item tags and two round scalloped tags.  One round tag lives on the front of the card behind the image and the other round tag lives inside the card in the pocket with the two 3" tags.

Rebirth of Spring

Hi, Crafty Peeps,

So here is tag #3 of 12!  I don't do Easter, so the bunny was out.  I  decided I would focus on the beauty of nature and G-d's renewal and rebirth of flowers, the rich greens of trees and shrubs and of course, there had to be butterflies.

The smaller butterflies were embossed with Sizzix Peppermint Twist and the larger butterfly was embossed with Sizzix Scallops & Lines.  All were sponged with distress inks and then sealed with Glossy Accents.  The grass was cut with MS Fringe Scissors and sponged with Mowed Lawn and Iced Spruce Distress Ink!

 I was trying to capture some of the early colors of spring and the yellow that I wanted was that color you see on buds when they go from pale yellow to green (and sometimes the opposite) just before they mature and start to open.  I used Squeezed Lemonade, Mowed Lawn, Iced Spruce and Pickett Fence to achieve this color.  I must say I had lots of fun working on this simple tag!

Supplies: Ranger Tag #8, Regular Item Tag; Sizzix Ornate Label, Sizzix Butterfly #12, Tim Holtz Alterations Movers and Shapers Mini Butterflies; Distress Inks: Stormy Sky, Faded Jeans, Squeezed Lemonade, Bundled Sage, Gathered Twigs; Ranger Pickett Fence Stain; Spellbinders' Ribbon Banners, Memory Box Dancing Tulips Die, Poppy Stamps Wildflower Patch Die, Glossy Accents, embossing folders, brads, foam tape, MS Fringe scissors.  The image on the base tag was created by placing three stamps from  Heartfelt Creations' Carnation Florals 2 on the same block and stamping them with Memento Potter's Clay Dye Ink.  I then brayed Pickett Fence Stain over the stamped images, wiped it down with a baby wipe and then stamped the images again. 









My fingers are still stained with ink from my efforts to match the color of my ribbon to the base of my tag.
I like really crinkled ribbon, and have found the best technique to get the look I want is to squeeze the wet ribbon into a tight ball, place it in the corner of a small sandwich bag and twist tightly.  I secure mine with a twist tie and let it set** over night.  The next morning I remove the ribbon from the bag and allow it to air dry.  Because the ribbon is so tightly coiled, you are able to manipulate it without fear of losing the bounce.
The ribbon was colored using glimmer mist made from the ink stains listed above mixed with Perfect Pearls and it was also dabbed with Pickett Fence Stain!

Magic Make A Wish - Key Chain Tag Mini- Made from Chewing Gum Box

Good Morning!  Today is my birthday and I plan to celebrate by not touching my computer or coming into my studio!  I have a quick post for our challenge over at Crafter's Cafe Challenge Blog.  This wonderful project was the brain child or Laura over at Following The Paper Trail.  She comes up with the neatest ideas.  Anyway, here is my take on her Key Chain Tag Mini!

I recieved this beautiful Key Chain as a gift from a Rabbi visitng from Israel.
I tried to pull the colors out of the Medallion and incorporate them into the design.

Originally, I used magnets to close my holder, but they were too big and kept pulling away, so I had to resort to velcro!  The tag holder is an altered Orbit Chewing Gum Box.

Good Morning, Cardies!

The Challenge Theme this week at Stamp-N-Doodle is "Tag It."  This is my third "tag" challenge in as many weeks, and I am finding that I actually like  the idea of adding tags to my cards.  I love this image because it reminds me that we should always just take a moment and have a little "quiet time".  Whether spent in prayer, reflection or just sleeping, it is important for all of us to just slow down and enjoy the Journey.  My daughter just celebrated her 39th birthday.  Funny, just yesterday, I remember, I was only sixteen.

DT CARD - OUTLAWZ GREETINGS CHALLENGE

Hello, Cardies!  This week at The Outlawz, our Greetings challenge was "Strawberry Pickens" and our cards had to include Strawberries as an element.   I've spent sometime researching various ways to use Distress Inks, and I used a few of them on this card.  The background image was sprayed on with a mist made with a Distress Reinker and Pearl Ex.  The flower was colored with a combination of Distress Ink, Acrylic Paint, and Homemade Glimmer Mist.  The tag is also colored with Distress Ink, Versa Ink, and Clear Embossing powder.  There is a little drip at the bottom edge of my background, but that is just a CHARACTOR FLAW! (LOL)
